    Hello, I’m a new member and hoping somebody will be able to help me in my search for my Aunty Flora.
    My uncle Jimmy (James Muir) was born in Hurlford on 10/10/1910 and died in Kilmarnock on 23/09/1974. His obituary stated “…dearly loved husband of Flora Goddard”
    I found a Flora Goddard, born 24/11/1915, married on 07/04/1933 to a John Kerr and a son, Douglas Muir Kerr, born on 07/07/1934. Flora’s obituary in 1985 stated “Dearly beloved wife of John Kerr”
    I can find no record of a marriage between Jimmy and Flora.
    The ‘Muir’ part of Douglas’ name is intriguing!
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I have just recently read your post. I don’t know if you now have a copy of the 1974 death certificate for James Muir. I see that it gives his marital status as “single”.
    I wonder if “Aunty Flora” was a family friend (or connected to the Muir family in some way) but not actually Jimmy Muir’s aunt?
    I think the name of the person who has signed James Muir’s death certificate is Douglas Kerr , who has signed as a “friend”.
    I will email some other details to you.

    Hello Joan, thank you for your reply and apologies for not replying sooner!

    It was only by chance that I visited the site today to see whether the East Ayrshire Family History Society had gone the way of happyhaggis.co.uk, having not heard anything since I joined, and there was your reply! I thought that I would have received an email notifying me of your reply.

    I do have Jimmy’s death certificate but hadn’t noticed Douglas Kerr’s name.

    Douglas Muir Kerr was born on 7th July 1934 to Flora Kerr nee Goddard when she was 18, having married John Kerr the year before on 7th April 1933. As I mentioned the ‘Muir’ part is intriguing.

    Uncle Jimmy and ‘Aunty’ Flora came to my 21st way back in 1967, and I just assumed that they were married. I’m virtually convinced that Flora Goddard is the Flora in question and I was rather hoping that another member of the Muir clan around Kilmarnock could have shone some light on this intriguing relationship.

    Douglas died in 2004. Flora died in 1985 and her obituary states ‘Dearly beloved wife of John Kerr’. He died in 1988.

    Thanks again for taking the trouble, Douglas Kerr was a good spot, although his status as ‘Friend’ just adds to the intrigue!
